Rev. Michael P. Hogan, O.S.A. (1930 - 2008)

Rev. Michael P. Hogan entered eternal life September 29, 2008 following a long period of declining health.

Michael P. Hogan was born March 9, 1930 to Michael P. and Sophia M. Hogan in Chicago, Illinois. He was Baptized March 20, 1930 at St. Margaret of Scotland Church, Chicago.

He graduated from St. Rita High School, Chicago, in 1947. He then did post-graduate studies at the Augustinian Preparatory Seminary, Staten Island, New York, prior to entering the Augustinian Novitiate September 8, 1949.

Mike professed simple (temporary) vows in the Order of St. Augustine September 9, 1950 and solemn (permanent) vows September 10, 1953. He was ordained a priest June 9, 1956.

He earned a B. A. in Philosophy from Villanova University, Villanova, Pennsylvania, in 1952 and an M.A. in American History from Villanova in 1956. DePaul University, Chicago, Illinois, awarded him an M. Ed. in Counseling in 1965.

Following his ordination in 1956, Father Hogan served for a year as Assistant Pastor of St. Mary Parish, Rockford, Illinois.

He was a teacher and counselor at Austin Catholic High School, Detroit, Michigan, from 1957 to 1960. He moved to St. Rita High School, Chicago, where he was Vice Principal for Guidance, teacher and Director of Public Relations between 1960 and 1970. He filled the same roles at Mendel Catholic High School, Chicago, between 1970 and 1974.

Father Hogan moved in July, 1974 to Miami, Florida, where he worked in the area of alcoholism rehabilitation, eventually becoming Director of Substance Abuse Ministry for the Diocese of Miami. In 1985 he relocated to the Diocese of Venice, Florida, where he was Director of Substance Abuse at Bethesda House and Director of A.I.D.S. Ministry for the Diocese.

He remained in those positions until 1993, when ill health forced Father Hogan to take a period of sick leave at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Monastery, Olympia Fields, Illinois. He was able to return to Florida in 1994, where he worked as a therapist at Hazelton Treatment Center, Miami, until 1995.

Father Hogan then resided at St. Alypius House, Chicago, Illinois, until ill health made it necessary for him to retire to several health care institutions. He was at Price Memorial, Eureka, Missouri, from early 2005 until the time of his death.

He is buried in the Augustinian plot at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Alsip, Illinois.
