Brother Joachim M. Sullivan entered eternal life October 2, 2001, following a long illness.
Joachim M. Sullivan was born August 16, 1941 to Edmund T. and Mary C. (Wall) Sullivan in Chicago, Illinois. He was baptized Eugene Edward September 10, 1941 at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, Chicago.
After studying at Notre Dame High School for Boys and following the death of his mother in 1957, Joachim, along with his father, entered the Augustinian formation program for Brothers at Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.
While his father left the formation program after a brief period, Joachim persevered. He took the religious name of Joachim Mary. He was received as a Novice in 1960 and professed simple (temporary) vows in the Order of St. Augustine September 4, 1961. He professed solemn (permanent) vows September 4, 1964.
Joachim served in the Maintenance Departments of Augustinian Academy, St. Louis, Missouri (1961-1962), and Austin Catholic High School, Detroit, Michigan (1962-1978).
He was named Coordinator of Religious Education at St. Augustine Church, Detroit, in 1978.
Joachim joined the staff of St. Peter Church, Douglas, Michigan, in 1989. In addition to providing pastoral care at the parish, he worked in prison ministry there.
Joachim joined Our Lady of Grace Community at Marian Village, Lockport, Illinois, in August, 2001. He was a member of that community at the time of his death.
During the years immediately following the Second Vatican Council, Joachim read extensively, attended lectures and participated in workshops about Scripture and Theology. He helped several of his brother Augustinians and priests to become theologically updated. Joachim is remembered as a quiet, kind and deeply spiritual man.
He is buried in the Augustinian Plot at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Alsip, Illinois.
Memorial gifts may be made to Augustinian Guild, 5401 S. Cornell Ave., Chicago, IL 60615-5664, or via Augustinian Guild Secure On-line Giving.
