Alumni of Mendel Catholic High School, Chicago, and friends of the Augustinians gather at the first all-school reunion, held Thanksgiving week-end, 1998. Among those present are (from left) Michael Sheehan, Sheriff of Cook County, Illinois; Jack Vlazny, President of the Friends of Tolentine; David L. Brecht, O.S.A., past Prior Provincial, Augustinians of the Midwest; and Dave Maher, Village Clerk, Orland Park, Illinois. More than 900 alumni attended the event. The Friends of Tolentine support Augustinian vocations and Augustinian seminary programs. |
The Men of Tolentine was organized in 1958 by the Very Rev. John L. Seary, O.S.A., who was Provincial of the Midwest Augustinian Province at the time. A separate women’s group, the Ladies of Tolentine, was also founded around the same time.
While the Ladies became inactive in the 1990s, the Men continued to flourish. In 2009, desiring to be more inclusive and to appeal to a broader base, the Men decided to welcome women into their ranks. The group changed its name to Friends of Tolentine.
The association's purpose remains to foster vocations to the Augustinian Order and support Augustinian formation programs.
Since 1958, the group has raised more than $700,000 for those purposes, primarily through their Man/Woman of the Year Banquet held each October.
Any man or woman wishing to become a member of Friends of Tolentine may do so by contacting Mr. Jack Vlazny, President, at 708-403-0358.
Robert A. Napoli, President of the Village of Willowbrook, Illinois, was honored October 15, 2009 by the Friends of Tolentine as their 2009 Man of the Year.
