The Men of Tolentine cited Farrell's support of Providence Catholic High School, an Augustinian school in New Lenox, Illinois. His leadership and involvement in the area of physical development led him to become the founding President of the Providence Catholic Athletic Association in 2003. This organization was responsible for the construction of new football bleachers and numerous other athletic improvements.

Farrell was born in 1955 in Evergreen Park, Illinois. He earned his high school diploma from Brother Rice High School, Chicago, in 1973. A 1977 summa com laude graduate of John Carroll University, University Heights, Ohio, Farrell completed medical school at Loyola University, Chicago, in 1980.

After five years of orthopedic residency in Erie, Pennsylvania, Farrell joined Parkview Musculoskeletal Institute in 1985, where he remains today.

Farrell and his wife Renee Elizabeth raised three children, all of whom attended Providence Catholic High School. Courtney, 21, is a graduate of the University of Iowa. William, 20, attends Penn State University. Jordan, 18, plays on the football team of Yale University.

The Men of Tolentine, now called Friends of Tolentine, is a group of lay men and women organized in 1958 by the late Very Rev. John L. Seary, O.S.A., then Provincial of the Augustinians of the Midwest, to foster and support vocations to the Augustinian Order. Since its founding the organization has contributed more than $700,000 to Augustinian formation programs. The largest part of this amount has come from the annual Man/Woman of the Year event, held each October.
