Planned Giving Options

There are many ways for people to make a Planned Gift to the Augustinians. These are some of the options as well as implications for the donors.

Options for Planned Giving

GIFTS OF CASH
  • The gift is tax deductible if the donor itemizes deductions.

  • Up to 50 per cent of adjusted gross income can be deducted in one year.

  • Excess can be deducted over the next five years.

PROPERTY THAT HAS LOST VALUE
  • The donor sells the property (stocks, securities, real estate), takes a loss for tax purposes and then contributes the cash.

  • A deduction is received for both the loss and the charitable gift.

MATCHING GIFTS
  • Program offered by many employers.

  • A matched gift can elevate the donor's gift to a higher level.

  • A donor may make a gift to remember a special anniversary, birthday or event.

ENDOWED GIFTS
  • The donor's gift is permanently invested to earn income for a specific purpose forever.

  • A steady income stream is produced year after year to support the donor's favorite ministry or cause.

  • Donors extend their giving beyond their lifetime.

  • If they qualify as a long term capital asset (held for at least 12 months and one day), the property may be given outright.

  • Avoids payment of capital gains tax on the increase in value of the stock.

  • Donor receives a deduction for the full fair market value of the stock at the time of the gift, limited to 30 per cent of the adjusted gross income.

  • Excess beyond 30 per cent of adjusted gross income can be carried forward up to five years.

  • The deduction for the cash surrender value of the property is received.

  • A donor may purchase a new policy naming the Augustinian Midwest Province as sole owner and beneficiary.

  • A deduction is received for the annual premium payments.
