Have a Heart for Peruvian Children

How to Take Part in 2010 Heart-to-Heart Project

The 2010 Heart-to-Heart Project, which concluded on Good Friday, April 2, 2010, brought in $5500 and 1845 hearts, the main sponsor, the Rockford (Illinois) Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, reported. This is the larget amount ever collected in the 10 years that the Project has existed. As a result, hundreds of poor Peruvian children will have the required materials that allow them to stay in school. Thank you to all who participated! Please plan to take part in the Lent 2011 Heart-to-Heart Project, an excellent activity for your religious education class, Sunday school or church youth program. Check back in early 2011 for details.

Children from across the United States are invited to join the Heart-to-Heart project for the poor children of northern Peru, said Penny Wiegert, editor of The Junior Observer, the newspaper for young Catholics published by the Diocese of Rockford, Illinois.

It's simple. Just click here and print the heart design. Next, have your child, grandchild or religious education students decorate and color the hearts. A drawing, poem, prayer, short message or other appropriate item may be added.

Then send in the decorated hearts, along with a $2 donation to help buy the school supplies that make it possible for Peruvian children to attend school. (In Peru, if a child does not have the required type of notebook, etc., he or she is not allowed to attend school. Many poor families cannot afford to buy the needed supplies, and their children are deprived of an education.)

Religious Education classes and youth organizations are encouraged to make Heart-to-Heart a group project.

The Rockford Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (D.C.C.W.) will send the hearts and donations to Augustinian Bishop Daniel Turley of the Diocese of Chulucanas, Peru. Bishop Turley and the Augustinian missionaries will distribute the hearts and school supplies as a gift to the children of Peru from the children of the United States.

Decorated hearts and donations (checks payable to "D.C.C.W.") may be sent to:
