The Catholic Diocese of Chulucanas, Peru, where Augustinian Missionaries work, covers 14,000 square miles. One-third of the area is desert. The other two-thirds are in the Andes Mountains.
Most of the half-million people who live there are farmers, trying to support their families on chacras (small farm fields) of three to five acres. There is much poverty among these hard-working people.
Although there are cities like Chulucanas (population 50,000) and Morropón (population 6000), the majority of the people live in small villages, often isolated in remote areas.
