Augustinian Achievers

Here are recent accomplishments or recognitions of several Augustinians of the Midwest:

Daniel T. Turley, O.S.A., Bishop of Chulucanas, Peru, was awarded the 2011 Peace Prize by the Peruvian government’s Ministry for Women’s Rights and Social Development, in recognition of his outstanding work in defense of farmers in the Upper Piura region of the Diocese of Chulucanas. Bishop Turley insisted that farmers’ concerns about environmental degradation, which would destroy their livlihood, be heard as part of the discussion about opening a large mining operation in the area. In the process he received death threats. The Ministry called Bishop Turley a tireless promoter of a culture of peace.

Bishop Turley is also a member of the Permanent Council of the Peruvian Bishops' Conference. He represents the mountain regions of Peru. The Diocese of Chulucanas includes a portion of northern Peru's coastal desert and extends up into the Andes mountains. Read more about Bishop Turley, the farmers and the mine.

Father Laird’s newest book, A Sunlit Absence: Silence, Awareness, Contemplation, has been released by Oxford University Press. (Opens new window) Addressed to beginners and intermediates on the pathless path of still prayer, A Sunlit Absence is a fresh presentation of ancient contemplative wisdom from Christian tradition. The book describes the stages of maturation in working with a prayer word and in dealing with distractions and addresses the role of the body and breath in contemplative prayer.

A Sunlit Absence is a companion to Father Laird’s earlier book Into the Silent Land: The Christian Practice of Contemplation (Opens new window), which examines the long Christian tradition of contemplative prayer and views the ancient wisdom of the Christian East and West from the perspective of modern-day longing for a radical openness to God in the depths of one's heart.
