Camp Restless: From Strangers to a Christian Community

There is something remarkable about the first and last moments of Camp Restless. At the beginning of the week, parents arrive with young people who are often nervous, uncertain, and, for the most part, complete strangers to one another. Six days later, those same parents return to witness something entirely different. The young people they entrusted to us have become a genuine Christian community. Camp Restless is the Midwest Augustinians' only ministry dedicated specifically to youth evangelization and formation. More than a summer camp, it is a place where faith is lived, friendships are formed, and young people discover the joy of Christian community through the lens of Augustinian spirituality.
This year's camp included several exciting additions. New excursions brought the fun and adventure of a traditional summer camp while strengthening friendships through shared experiences. Recreation and formation worked hand in hand, creating opportunities for trust, laughter, and lasting memories.
Formation also grew in meaningful ways through the collaboration of Augustinians, Br. Nathan, and the sisters. Rather than being confined to presentations, faith became part of the rhythm of each day through conversation, prayer, reflection, and authentic encounters with Christ.
One of the week's most meaningful additions was our evening Unitas time. As the day came to a close, campers gathered outdoors around a bonfire and at conversation tables with the friars and sisters. Stories were shared, questions were asked, and friendships grew naturally. Before long, young people and religious were pulling out guitars and other instruments, singing together, laughing, and simply enjoying one another's company. What began as an evening gathering became the heart of Camp Restless, where strangers became friends and friends became a Christian community.
The transformation became unmistakably visible at the closing Mass. Parents who had entrusted their children to Camp Restless returned to witness something extraordinary. They watched as their sons and daughters confidently proclaimed the Scriptures, served as liturgical ministers, led the music, sang with joy, and participated fully in the Eucharistic celebration. More importantly, they witnessed young people encouraging one another, praying together, and celebrating their faith with confidence. Many parents shared how deeply moved they were by the transformation they witnessed in just six days.
That is the mission of Camp Restless. The week is filled with recreation, prayer, formation, and friendship, but its greatest accomplishment cannot be measured by activities alone. It is found in lives touched by Christ, friendships rooted in faith, and young people who leave knowing they belong—to one another, to the Church, and to the Augustinian family.
As Camp Restless continues to grow, it remains one of the Midwest Augustinians' most meaningful ministries. We look forward with gratitude to welcoming another generation of young people to discover faith, friendship, and the joy of walking together in the spirit of St. Augustine.
